Biography

Dr Mo Akmal is the Director of The London Spine Unit, a private practice facility based at Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth and currently the Lead Clinician for Orthopaedic and Trauma at St Marys Hospital. He is also the Clinical and Educational Supervisor for Orthopaedic Trainees at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trusts and am responsible for overseeing the educational and clinical progress of trainees through the surgical training programme. His accountability lies with the newly formed London School of Surgery. The role involves assessments and appraisals of Foundation year and Specialist Trainees in Orthopaedics. The Multidisciplinary Spine Service at St Marys Hospital was one of the key projects of Dr Mo Akmal on the NHS. By engaging pain rheumatologists, specialist consultants, radiologists, psychologists, allied health professionals and nurse specialists we have enhanced our productivity and reduced waiting times for patients on the NHS. He has been pivotal in the establishment of a Community based musculoskeletal Triage system for Kensington & Chelsea PCT and Westminster PCT and led in developing protocols for referral into seconday care and developed clinical links with oncology, neurosurgery, ortho surgery, neurology, radiology, physiotherapy and rheumatology in setting up a spinal surgical service at St Marys. They are developing a unique sacral tumour surgery service and I have been offered an honorary contract at The Royal Marsden Hospital to support this complex work. They are now a Tertiary centre for spine surgery

Research Interest

Dr Mo Akmal is very committed in developing tissue engineering programme for musculoskeletal disorders. He has both theoretical and practical knowledge of processes, governing regulations, patenting issues and techniques involved in Tissue engineering articular cartilage and spinal discs.
